British Airways v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 06 Jun 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won By 1 wicket
Match report
"British Airways mis-read the flight of Rajabali"
The Amersham Aerial Display Team soared to the top of TVL 4a with a nail-biting 1 wicket win over British Airways 1's at the Concorde Club on Saturday
As we taxi'd into the ground there was uncertainty from the captain as to whether we would start on time but the control tower cleared us for take off, slightly delayed, but with the opportunity to make up the time for the scheduled finish
On winning the toss, again, the ACC skipper decided to take first use of the runway and buckled his team in for a hard fought bowling display.
Opening with the ever reliable Duncan "747" Ward (1-31) and new kid on the block Stuart "A380" Rogers (0-48), Amersham looked to get into the BA middle order before the drinks trolley made it's first appearance
Unfortunately for A380, Nick "Lancaster Bomber" Piper choked on his pretzels and missed a couple of hard chances in the gulley letting off the care-free Faizal (22) and Chaz (23) whilst Captain Ash and James "Tornado" Dolleymore decided that a slip catch was travelling close to the speed of sound and decided against attempting a catch.
A quick-scoring, if slightly fortunate, opening partnership finally had it's wings clipped by 747, bringing Austin (19) to the wicket.
The introduction of Mustapha "Montgolfier" Rajabali (6-31) to proceeedings significantly changed the plotted route of the BA innings and once again his flight was too much for the swinging BA middle order and wickets fell regularly as the overs passed
Supported manfully by Steve "Harrier Jump Jet" Emsley (or the human bruise), 2-33, and the re-introduction of A380, it was only Khan (32) that put up any timely resistance. A wonky radar meant Ankur "The Glider" Kandelwal only managed three overs and Captain Ash didn't even flick the auto-pilot on.
A late smash by Singh (19) gave the BA innings a sense of respectability and offered hope, but a First Class catch by Robbie "Turbo-Prop" Marsh ended the home sides effort at 162 all out, perhaps 30-40 runs light - or so we thought.
Having eaten tea on our laps, drunk luke warm tea from platic mugs and walked off a bit of DVT, The ACCADT began their pursuit of BA
Elliot "Jumbo" Ketteringham (35) and Lancaster (17) opened the innings and kept the run rate ticking over with a mixture of aerial and ground hugging drives. A mis-timed run, under-carriage everywhere, saw the demise of Lancaster but brought to the wicket Paul "Spitfire" Weston who failed to build on his early sesaon form with a nudging and nurdlling 8.
His return to the hanger along with that of Jumbo to two good out-field catches allowed the new middle order of James "Trolley" Dolleymore and The Glider to navigate us toward our final destination
Some quick running and mighty blows to the leg side got us to within 45 runs of our target but then cabin pressure was lost.
Trolley (29), The Glider (25), and The Captain (0) all fell leaving 747 (18) and Turbo-prop (10*) with a nasty little 35 to negotiate.
With nerves calmed our final descent appeared to be a smooth one until we hit major turbulence. With only 3 runs needed for victory 747, Harrier Jump Jet, and A380 fell to the excellent Bowwon (1-35) and Rahid (2-12). Fortunately for the ACCADT Montgolfier and Turbo-prop scampered a single for victory as the landing lights shone brightly at 8.10pm.
As doors were set to manual and baggage finally reclaimed the ACCADT refected on a gutsy, if nerve-wracking victory.
We'll get the photo's developed, washing done, peel a bit and then ready ourselves for Stoke Green at Shardeloes this Saturday
