Windsor 2 v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 20 Jun 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Won By 6 Wickets
Match report
Amersham return to form with a well paced run chase
A much more secure batting display from the Amersham top order resulted in a comfortable 6 wicket win over Windsor in the (sort of) presence of Her Majesty.
Electing to bat first on a dry and hard wicket, Windsor took full advantage of a lightening quick outfield and some wayward bowling from the Amersham openers. Butt (24) and Channa (30) passed 50 before Dixon, replacing the out of sorts Rogers, tempted Channa out of his ground and Colquhoun completed a competent stumping.
With the unprotected third man area peppered and little luck coming Wards way, the skipper decided to turn to spin to take the pace off the ball. Bowling from the Castle End the skipper (2-63) actually bowled quite well and, in tandem with Dixon (3-48), began reeling in the run rate.
What transpired over the middle overs had everyone reaching for the record books - well Statto nearly had kittens anyway! The next four wickets were all caught and bowled, 2 to both Ash & Dixon.
With the middle order removed, Amersham looked to finish off the Windsor innings for an under-par score of around 150. However, Lines (57), ably assisted by Davis, Hill & Care played some very sensible and attacking strokes taking the innings to 208 from their 52 overs. It was only three run outs (three weeks in a row for Weston) in the last few overs that stopped this total getting even bigger.
Some poor ground fielding, on what was admittedly a difficult surface, somewhat tarnished Dixon's figures but a very tight line (no fine leg for the majority of the spell) really pressurised the Windsor batters.
A good couple of death overs by Khandelwal also reminded the skipper of the strength in depth he has in his bowling options.
There was a certain nervousness after last weeks batting offer as Ketteringham and Weston strode to the wicket to begin our run chase, accentuated somewhat as Ketteringham strode back towards us after the first ball of the innings.
However, Weston and Colquhoun steadied the ship and started attacking the Windsor bowlers.
The 50 came up in 7.2 overs with Colquhoun continuing his blistering start to the season - the nochalance of not running as the ball passed fielders was particularly enjoyed by the ACC support. Weston, also continued his steady start to the season with another innings of solid defence and aeriel bombardment.
Unfortunately with his personal 50 passed, Colquhoun played a very out of character shot and was caught at mid-wicket meaning Statto had to stop working out whether the c&b record was set in 1967 or 1968 and stride to the wicket.
A circumspect start by Aylott allowed Weston to free his arms and move into the 30's with some typically bruising strikes. As the run rate steadied with some tight bowling from Davis (1-48) Weston went for one swipe too many and was caught on the boudary edge for the thrid time this season
The main feature of this run chase, however, was the ability to re-build the innings with the falling of a wicket. With Weston gone, Aylott took on the senior partners role as Dolleymore found his feet.
A partnership of 62 in 12 overs took Amersham to within 40 of victory as the storm clouds gathered over Slough. The impending rain pushed Dolleymore (34) to hit out, the highlight being a Savoir Faire maximum straight down the ground, but this was to be his undoing, caught on the boundary a few delivereis later.
There are few more experienced duo's you would want to see you home than Ward and Aylott and they duly obliged, the latter bringing up a well deserved 50 with the winning boundary. Particular mention must go to Tim who played the innings we have been crying out for - a solid time consuming 50 allowing the hitters around him to do their business without fear of a collapse.
With 5 overs and 6 wickets in hand this was a good confident victory from the Amersham team.
