AMERSHAM CC Lost By 31 runs

Match report THE 2's CRUMBLE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN AMERSHAM GREAT
Shardeloes witnessed a see-saw battle between local rivals played in a competitive spirit that ultimately saw the home side capitulate and lose a game they should have strolled.
Asked to bowl first Amersham's new opening pair of Rogers and Khandelwal were put to the sword by Saunders (45) and Tuner (51). A fast outfield, inconsistent bowling lengths coupled with good shot making meant a slow, but steady, start soon began to blossom.
The introduction of Aylott (0-21) did little to ease the run rate despite some hostile deliveries and it was only when the spinning (ish) duo of Ash and Rajabali were introduced that some order was brought to the innings.
The initial breakthrough, on the stroke of drinks, came about with Saunders playing on to Ash. This opened an end and the run rate of close to 4 an over stalled as a tight line, solid fielding and cautious batting became the order of the middle overs
Rajabali was once again subtle in his variation of flight and soon teamed up with Aylott for the first of their three dismissals to get rid of Tuner - a well composed innings from one of the many competent youngsters in the Chesham line up.
From such a strong position just before drinks, Chesham would have looked to close in on 250 but Rajabali (6-48 from 17) ripped through the middle order, supported by the somewhat full Ash (2-50 from 15). Good catching from all the fielders (Aylott 3, Haddock and Tilbury) and bowlers (Rajabali) meant that 184 all out was a very manageable scoreline.
In response, Amersham lost Cowley early leaving the returning Haddock and Weston to start building a reply. Weston was watchfullness personified as he looked to knuckle down and score big. At the other end Haddock was beginning to remind all watching of the class hidden underneath those surfing locks as drives and cuts sped to the boundary.
A nasty beamer caused a bit of claret to be shed, but the response by Haddock was to dispose of the protagonist into the corn field.......twice! A very well crafted 50 became slightly ragged as illness and cricket tiredness started to take their toll.
However, as the target dipped below 100, the crowds grew in size, and word got round of the exploits of Atkinson in the 1's, all seemed pretty good in the Amersham world.
The introduction of the more junior Rance changed all of that. Bowling from the Pavilion end, his well-flighted, turning, off-spin caused havoc. First Weston (22) and then Haddock (64) fell, before Dolleymore and Tilbury contrived to give Chesham a chance.
Whilst all of this was going on the ever-reliable Aylott continued to mix stout defence with the odd attacking stroke, but even he fell as a combination of panic and poor shot selection took hold
Khandelwal, Ash and Piper added little to the scoreline as Rance and the returning Tuner (2-33), another one of the young crop, continued to rip through the order.
Rajabali was left stranded on 2 as the last wicket fell 31 runs short of victory.
A really disappointing batting display meant a game that should have been a canter was lost. More application is required when a wicket or two goes down coupled with the realisation that boundaries aren't the only way of scoring runs.
Next week we welcome the much improved Slough to Shardeloes as the second half of the season kicks off - a more determined batting display is required.
