Match report AMERSHAM'S BATTING WOES RETURN
The fragility of the Second XI's batting again came to light with a disappointing thrashing by Hampton Hill on Saturday
Under leaden sky's the uncovered wicket offered only one option on winning the toss - chuck 'em in. The skipper duly obliged and the much changed Amersham XI took to the field with high expectations
Ward and Rogers again opened the innings and produced a very tidy display of seam and swing bowling. Runs were hard to come by and slow progress, as expected, was the order of the day. Rogers continued his good form this season, still with little luck, but the ability to change his length and bowl a fuller length into the wind meant his designated 7 overs only cost 16 runs.
Ward finally made the breakthrough in the 12th over with the dismissal of Barr-Jones, and he followed this up soon after by dismissing Ilyab.
Rajabali replaced Rogers and once again got amongst the wickets early. The Hampton skipper, Exworth, offered a thunder-bolt (wind assisted) to O Haddock at long on for 11 and Dhinindra played all around a straight one.
Whilst this was going on three constants remained - Ward bowling a tidy line with the wind behind, Hampton hitting the ball cleanly, and young male deer taking a liking to D Haddock!
Hampton (57) was one of the main reasons Amersham lost this game. His batting was a class above any of his team mates (and as it turned out the opposition) and his innings meant a getable 110 became a testing 160.
Rajabali finally got his man, despite being un-nerved by a no-ball call from the returning Umpire Theaker and having to bowl to an off-side field of Ward, Weston and Heslop!!! He followed this up with the wickets of Dolman (the ever-talking Aussie) and Trood for his third 5 wicket haul of the season
At the other end Ward's magnificent spell (2-32 from 15) came to an end and his replacement was the returning Yorkite, Harmer. Although bowling slightly short and sometimes wayward, he did pick up a wicket and another seamer is welcomed back to the ACC rank.
Again ACC showed their inability to finish an innings off and Carr (32), Robottom (9) and Trood (7) batting at 7,9, & 10 added a further 50 unwelcome runs. Ash finaly came on when the big hitters had gone and cherry-picked the last two wickets of the innings which closed on 161 all out from 51 overs
Opening with a spinner and medium-pacer, Hampton exploited knowledge of home conditions to great effect. Unremarkable (some say dreadful) shots from Ash and O Haddock immediately got ACC off to a woeful start from which they never recovered. Carr (5-39) and Exworth (5-29) bowled a tight line and length offering no bad balls and soon the pressure mounted.
Weston mixed attack with resolute defence but was unable to break the shackles and improve the run rate above more than a couple an over. His dismissal for 24 in the 24th over, with the score on only 37 highlights how well the Hampton bowlers contained Amersham. Cowley's innings offered an even starker example of this fact - he was unable to attack either of the bowlers and his 14 took 26 overs to compile.
Piper, replacing the unlucky Weston and getting a lenghty opportunity to bat for the first time for some weeks, was very unlucky to be dismissed by a full length one-handed effort at cover point which sort of summed up Amersham's day
Ward and D Haddock offered some resistance with scampered 1's and 2's (Haddock obviously) and mighty straight drives (Ward obviously) before both were "dismissed". Ward patently caught off his thigh pad and Haddock given LBW to one that hit him at hip height somewhat soured our run chase and the quick demise of Heslop, Rajabali, and Harmer brought the ACC innings to a close.
Although comprehensively outplayed by the better team on the day, i am pleased to report that Amersham retained their dignity throughout and did not sink to the pleading, screeching, and in one case abusive appealing that soured the end of the match.
