Stoke Green v AMERSHAM CC Saturday 2nd X1 on Sat 15 Aug 2009 at 12:30
Match was Drawn
Match report
Amersham II's were very unlucky in not obtaining the maxixum 25 points in a nail biting draw against Stoke Green last Saturday. Stand-in skipper Weston lost the toss and Amersham were asked to bat first on a wicket that looked like it might break up and offer assistance to the bowlers later in the match. Ketteringham & Piper opened up for Amersham but Elliot was soon back in the hutch as he became victim to the Stoke Green daisy cutter which removed his off stump. Olly Haddock joined Nick Piper and together they added 100 for the second wicket in good time. Haddock was in fine form playing attacking shots around the ground, whilst at the other end Pipes was happy to play the anchor role. When Pipes departed at 100-2 after 25 overs it gave the Amersham middle order license to play their shots to set up a challenging total. Dolleymore (30) joined Haddock and together they blasted 60 off the next 8 overs, with Dolleymore content to operate with just four and sixes! By this time Haddock was approaching his century, but somehow became becalmed in the nervous nineties and was out for 94 just short of what would have been a wonderful century. Steve Emsley (18*), Paul Weston (20) and then Dominic Haddock (16)all joined the party with aggressive strokeplay and the captain had the luxury of declaring on 234 for 6, giving Stoke Green 51 overs to get the runs.
Weston deciding to use the old ball in the hope of finding some indifferent bounce and spin. He opened up with Stuart Rogers and David Sidebottom and it wasn't long before Stuart had sent back a couple of their best batsmen. Stoke Green were also in need of the points and decided to chance their arm and play a few shots which was keeping them up with the required rate. Harmer, McKay & Emsley were then brought into the attack and with all of them picking up a wicket, it looked at the half way point, with Stoke Green five wickets down, as if Amersham were on course for a vital victory. Malik (63) & Ifraz (49) had other ideas and together put on a hundred for the sixth wicket. This made life difficult for captain Weston as on the one hand he wanted them to go for the runs but at the same time he had to stem the flow of runs. With David Sidebottom bowling well and restricting the runs from one end, Weston was able to bring on Ketteringham from the pavilion end who was able to extract some turn from the lifeless pitch and was unlucky not break this frustrating sixth wicket parnership. With 10 overs to go, five wickets in hand and fifty runs required the game was fast running away from Amersham. Rogers was brought back in the attack and immediately removed the dangerous Malik and then in the next over with the run rate creeping up, Sidebottom induced Ifraz down the wicket and was smartly stumped by Ketteringham, now re-instated behind the stumps. Stoke Green were feeling the pressure and helped by a suicidal run-out and a fourth wicket from the impressive Rogers, Stoke Green's last pair batted out the last ten balls to deny Amersham victory. This was a thoroughly entertaining game that went down to the wire with all results possible right down to the last over. Amersham claiming a creditable 15 points, which keeps them right in contention for the second promotion place as Chesham unexpectedly lost to OMT. Only six points now cover the four sides battling for the second place and next Saturday they all play against each other with Amersham at home to Windsor and Chesham entertaining British Airways. It certainly looks like we will need to win all three of our remaining matches to gain promotion, with hopefully the mouth watering prospect of a winner take all derby against Chesham on 5th September.
