AMERSHAM CC Saturday 3rd X1 v Boyne Hill 3 on Sat 16 May 2009 at 13:30
AMERSHAM CC Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
This exciting match was marred by a piece of astonishing bad sportsmanship by the Boyne Hill number 4 who went on to hit the winning runs............more of that later.
Amersham batted first on a lively Barn Meadow wicket and lost two early wickets cheaply for 21. The captain steadied the ship with another 50 and supported by fighting forties from Tim Aylott and the returning Renee Adams posted a respectable 203.
In reply Boyne Hill were always up with the run rate but with 6 wickets down the match was delicately balanced................and then came the incident. Stuart Rogers bowled it, the number 4 went for a quick single and on realising his partner had no chance of making his ground deliberately put his arm out to prevent Stuart from getting to the ball on his follow through. Unfortunately for the number 4 he didn't realise he was taking on the Chiltern U19's hooker who burst through the high tackle and ran out the number 8 by yards. Owzat for the deliberate obstruction, owzat for the run out went the two calls both players palpably out. But who had to go? Only one man can. In the heat of the moment the number 8 went but with hindsight the man who should have headed back to the pavilion was the number 4, who's action has no place on a cricket field and perhaps neither does he, because his dismissal was the first.
He went on to score the winning runs in what ought to be remembered by the really close finish between two evenly matched sides. Instead, ten Boyne Hill players had the edge taken off their hard-earned victory by being extremely embarrassed and suitably apologetic about the actions of one of their own who we are assured is heading home to a disciplinary hearing.
