Match report Wily spin bowler Mustapha Rajabali engineered Amersham’s first league win of the season in this local derby on Saturday at The Meadow. The left-armer ended with figures of 6-45 off 19 overs as he outwitted one Chesham batsman after another.

Suresh Perumal and Jeremy Fisher laid the foundation for Amersham’s reply, and new signing Steve Wilde from Barnes, played a match-winning innings with a crucial 38.

Amersham were almost denied victory in a farcial climax which saw rain stop play with four overs left. After play resumed, the Shardeloes men kept their nerve and won with 15 balls to spare.

Chesham, inserted on a slow wicket, had made a solid start with Pete Clifford and Graham Rance putting on 43. After the introduction of Rajabali, Clifford was needlessly run out and Rance followed quickly as he became the first of Rajabali’s victims.

Tim O’Gorman and Steve Ayres rebuilt the innings but could not make a big impact, and Chesham ended on 178-7 from their 52 overs, with Dave Porter and Nick Haynes adding some valuable runs at the end.

Chesham hoped this target might be enough when Amersham made a disastrous start in reply, losing their openers for two runs to Clifford and Porter. Perumal had other ideas, chalking up 48 with masterful strokeplay, while Fisher waited calmly to pick off runs.

Amersham wobbled again at 113-4 and Chesham pulled themselves back through Jon Hardy (4-33). At 143-7 Amersham needed 36 runs from 11 overs. When Wilde was joined by Duncan Ward, the two batted sensibly to steer Amersham home, interrupted only by the rain.

An encouraging performance by Amersham, who tomorrow will field new Aussie signing Adrian Ashman at home to Harefield.
